Port Stephens lies at the northern end of the Hunter region of New South Wales and is about two and a half hours drive north from Sydney. The region is unique on the east coast. Not only does it have a fantastic all weather harbour, but it also boasts some of the countries best surfing beaches. Surrounding towns set on inlets of the harbour provide a huge range of individual destinations to visit within the greater Port Stephens region. The largest and most popular holiday destination at Port Stephens is the town of Nelson Bay. Here you will find a vibrant holiday village set on a calm water beach on the southern shores of the bay. A modern marina provides boaties with excellent facilities for enjoying the water sports and the like that are so popular here. Big game fishing is popular here with the continental shelf being a few nautical miles offshore. Nelson Bay is adjoined by a number of smaller towns that are all holiday destinations in their own right. Corlette, Tanilba Bay, Lemon Tree Passage, Hawkes Nest and several others which all have waterfrontage onto the Port Stephens waterfront.
There is also no shortage of places to stay in Port Stephens. Over the last few years a number of spectacular new resorts have been built here that complement the array of holiday apartments and holiday homes that have made up the backbone of the local accommodation industry for decades. Port Stephens is only about fourty five minutes drive from Newcastle along Stockton Bight and just west of Newcastle is the famous Hunter Valley. This is one of Australia's premier wine growing regions that is world famous for both its reds and its whites. There are more than a hundred cellar doors and many excellent restaurants and cosy cafes.. It is a great place to spend a day visiting the vineyards and restaurants or playing golf at one of the local resort courses. Inland from Port Stephens is the beautiful Barrington Tops mountain region. The National Park here is a great place to visit with is magnificent eucalypt forests and even the occasional snowfall during the winter months.
